Hello, I'm Mr. Procter. I'm looking forward to a great year with your student in Social Studies. As you may know, Social Studies encompasses five distinct strands, or areas of study: American History, World History, Civics/Government, Geography, and Economics.
All five of these strands will be viewed through the study of the American Revolutionary War, World War II, the Cold War, and the modern presidency. This year will be a challenge for all 8th grade students as they read and study documents such as the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, George Washington's Farewell Address, the United Nation's Charter, Dwight D. Eisenhower's Farewell Address, and many others. Further, students will be writing every day and will use their own interactive student notebook to enhance their learning experience.
Similarly, 7th grade students will learn about Social Studies through the study of the Civil War, the Industrial Revolution, World War I, the Great Depression, and other events of the 19th and 20th centuries. Students will read parts of the United States Constitution, the Gettysburg Address, and Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points.
What makes this year special is that a presidential election is taking place in November. Students will read about the candidates and their positions prior to the election.
