Mr. Procter's Teaching Philosophy - How & Why I Teach
Introduction
What follows is my teaching philosophy. I use the acronym TERPS as an homage to the University of Maryland, where I attended college. Maryland is the home of the Terrapins, or Terps, for short. Since then, I’ve earned three master’s degrees. I didn’t complete these degrees as a way to earn points; I earned them because I believe in education and that all of us should be life-long learners. My teaching philosophy is the same – a student today should be a student for life. Learning should be fun and rewarding. When we were toddlers we loved learning new things: colors, letters, shapes. We marveled at our first steps and once we learned to speak, most of us never stopped! Yet, for all that enjoyment, somewhere along the way we stopped wanting to learn. It ceased being enjoyable. My intent is to keep and to nurture the joy of learning for our children. They are truly the ones who will own the future of our country and, indeed, the world, and through them we will either rise or fall as a people. Although a statement of this type can be read as encompassing, it is not. There is always more one can do. It is the beginning of a journey that lasts a lifetime; so as you read it, remember that there is a place for all of us in it – student, parent, and teacher. And don’t forget – GO TERPS!

T – Technology. Every student should have the ability to use technology in his or her learning process and environment. Without having to go to a library or make a special trip to a museum, today’s students can access large amounts of information while at their desk inside the classroom. Soft technology, such as apps and other programs allow students to present their work in a newer, more modern format. The days of simply writing a report and presenting it as a Word document are over! As an educator, I have to adapt to this new environment and embrace it, for it is what my students will use from now on in their lives, not just at school, but out in the real world as well.
E – Educate. Educate is a verb and I chose this word because that is what I do. I educate. The word was first used in the mid-1500s and comes from the Latin educatus, meaning to bring up, rear, train. Schoolwork should be hard enough to push each student’s limits, but not so difficult that it frustrates. Research should provoke more questions and evoke an intellectual curiosity that induces the student to discover more.
R – Respect. Respect is a word that is cavalierly used today, yet its importance in education cannot be overemphasized. Respect, or showing a deferential regard for others, must be given in order to be received. Unfortunately, many today use respect as a punch line or as a way to complain about perceived mistreatment. As an educator, I respect what others say, so long as they say it with respect. The classroom must be a place where ideas can be freely exchanged without the risk of rebuke or disdain.
P – Positive Attitude. Having a positive attitude in education is genuinely important. As a teacher, I must maintain a positive attitude in order optimize my teaching skills. A bad or negative attitude can hang over a classroom like a dark cloud and dampen the atmosphere necessary to facilitate an excellent education experience. Whilst a teacher must have a positive attitude, so must the student and his or her parent. The student must be receptive to an upbeat learning environment and also be adequately prepared to engage in the learning process. Moreover, the parent must also have a positive attitude while helping their son or daughter with schoolwork.
S – Student. I teach for the student. It is he or she who has the most to gain from my knowledge and skills as an educator. Without students, I am nothing; with them, I am everything. I can prepare the children of today to become the successful adults of tomorrow. Only an educated population of today’s children can ensure our country’s success tomorrow. Our country must be successful because we represent liberty and freedom throughout the world. If our children are successful, our country will be successful, and because of that, the human race will be successful. Every student is important and must be treated as though the world depends on them, because it does.
¡Y no se olvide - GO TERPS!
