As a historian and a teacher, I consider Social Studies to be as important a subject as any other. Not only will it help students read and write at a higher level, Social Studies will also help students become better citizens. How many times do we see person-on-the-street interviews where the average person can't even identify a picture of the president? Many people cannot find our nation's capital on a map or explain how a bill becomes a law. Despite those deficiencies those same people vote and make decisions about the country. I want your students to be well-informed so they know what is going on in the country and other parts of the world to be able to make informed decisions and to be knowledgable about the world around them.
Moreover, I encourage you to see to it that your student reads every day for at least 30 to 60 minutes. This includes newspapers and news magazines, as well as biographies and other works of non-fiction. Students should never be without reading material - a few minutes here and there all adds up. I do some of my best reading standing in line at the store! They should carry a book with them to school so when they have a few minutes of down time in class they have something to do that will benefit them. The school's media center and the local public library have plenty of choices available. I've included some useful links on this site where students and families alike can learn more about what is being taught in school.
And lastly, always feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
